The GroundS

The property sits above Shinglekill Falls.  You can sit on the porch glider or rocking chairs and finish off the Sunday Crossword whilst listening to the tumble of the falls just a few yards away. Or join friends for conversation over wine & cheese in the gazebo. The lower lawn can accommodate a large (size) tent for special events.  The old gristmill, mill stones and natural flower beds provide a lovely setting for photographs.  The ancient stone wall is gradually being restored and the out houses (now used for storage) evoke memories of a time long past. Benches are situated for optimal views of the falls. You can walk down a small ramp and walk along the stone stream bed to the old dam ruins to view the pool from atop the 32’ falls.  Please do not get too near the edge! Or you can walk around the Mill following a path which leads down to the base of the falls.  Though the path is not too steep nor too long, those with (and without) physical challenges will be happy to rest at “Eileen’s Bench”.    Many a poem and even some songs have been inspired by the ambiance and beauty of Shinglekill Falls.

The waterfall is semi-private, the property line is shared with our neighbors Tumblin’ Falls B&B. Family, friends and other B&B guests are the only persons allowed on the property.  For many decades the waterfall was open to the public.  We have many guests and visitors who recall walking through the grist mill, paying a dime for entry to the falls and spending the entire afternoon jumping from the cliff to the pool below.

Sadly, the waterfall is no longer open to the public and jumping from the cliff is strictly prohibited.  While we are saddened that we can no longer be open to the general public this decision has created a wonderful oasis for our guests.  There is something exceptionally special in reclining on a lounge chair, reading a book and sipping a glass of wine by the water’s edge.  Trout surface in the large pool leaving iridescent ripples. The mist from the falls cools the air as the warm summer sun beams down.  Dragonflies skim the water, frogs play in the shallows and all your worries and stress float away.  It is a little slice of heaven, nestled in the Northern Catskill Mountains.
